When can I get ScrollCompass?

ScrollCompass is not released yet. It is being prepared for iPhone and iPad (iOS 17 or later) and for Android phones and tablets (Android 8.0 or later). This site will link to the App Store and Google Play as soon as it is available.

Does it need an internet connection?

No. Every map, illustration, caption and sound file is installed with the app. ScrollCompass makes no network requests at all, and works exactly the same in airplane mode.

You need a connection only to download the app from your app store.

Do I need an account?

ScrollCompass has no accounts and no sign-in. There is nothing to sign up for and no password to remember.

Which languages does it speak?

English, 简体中文 (Simplified Chinese), Español (Latinoamérica), Português (Brasil), Deutsch and Français. You choose a language when you first open the app. You can change this at any time, even in the middle of a journey.

English is the original text. The translations have not yet been reviewed by native-speaker editors.

Is there spoken narration?

No recorded narration yet. With narration on, captions are read aloud by your device's voice. Captions carry the whole story and are always available, and the journeys come with quiet ambient sound, such as wind on the road or the wash of the sea, which you can turn off.

How does the map show what is uncertain?

Every place carries a certainty level: confirmed, widely accepted, traditional, approximate, disputed or unknown. Routes and places that are approximate, disputed or unknown are drawn dotted with a small badge. Select the badge, or open About this reconstruction, to read why that place or road is uncertain and what has been reconstructed.

The maps are illustrations, not survey data. Coastlines are simplified, some distances are adjusted for legibility, and several locations are known only approximately. Each one carries its own note.

Where is my progress saved, and does it sync?

Progress is stored only on this device. ScrollCompass does not synchronise between devices or between iPhone and Android. Your device's own backup may copy the data, but ScrollCompass does not promise that.

How do I reset my progress?

Open Settings from the library. Reset one journey clears your progress through a single journey. Reset all local data clears progress and preferences for every journey on the device. Both ask you to confirm, and neither can be undone. Uninstalling the app also removes everything it stored.

Can I use it with VoiceOver, TalkBack or larger text?

Yes. ScrollCompass was built with accessibility from the start:

• VoiceOver and TalkBack. The map has a spoken layer for its places, routes and markers, and the Journey stops list offers every place in order, without gestures.
• Larger text. ScrollCompass follows your system text size. Change it in your device settings and ScrollCompass will match it.
• Reduced motion. Camera moves and route drawing become immediate. Nothing is left out. The app follows your system setting, or you can choose always or never in Settings.
• Not by colour alone. Land, sea, return and uncertain routes differ in their line pattern as well as their colour.
• Captions. Captions are always available, with or without narration.

Is it suitable for children?

Each journey shows age guidance (7 and over, or 10 and over) and a note for parents and teachers on its details page. Violence and death are stated plainly and briefly, never dramatised or drawn in detail, and a content note appears before the scenes that need one. There is no chat, no ads and nothing to share.

Does ScrollCompass include Bible text?

ScrollCompass gives chapter-and-verse references and its own summaries. It does not reproduce a Bible translation. Every scene gives its passage as a reference, so you can read it in the Bible of your choice.
